The Chalet of the Bears (le Chalet aux Ours) is an authentic Swiss chalet brought over from Interlaken, Switzerland, and constructed on its current site in 1929. Perched on a wooded cliff overlooking the Atlantic Ocean, it is one of the first places in the United States to see the sunrise each day. There are beautiful ocean views from the property, and a mile-long wooded road that forms an oval--perfect for strolling or jogging.

Descend the stairway through our woods and take your breakfast or lunch on a deck right over the ocean or at your own outdoor table. Enjoy a relaxing walk on the private cobble beach. Fire up a gas grill just outside your door.

Nestled on a wooded peninsula in Hulls Cove, the Chalet is just a mile from the Acadia National Park Visitor's Center, and is just 3 miles from the bustling charm of downtown Bar Harbor. It is located on a quiet secluded point at the end of a private drive. (see map). Our woods shelter hummingbirds, hermit thrushes, deer and ladyslippers.

The rental apartment is a cozy unit with its own heating zone and private bath. It looks out into the garden on one side and into deep woods on the other. There is a private entrance directly into the woods. It has a queen-sized bed, making it suitable for two persons. Kitchen facilities include a microwave oven, toaster, coffee maker and grinder, and a full-sized refrigerator and freezer. Outside there is a gas grill and two-burner stovetop, plus a table nearby--all for your private use.

We provide all dishes and silverware, cooking utensils, sheets, blankets and towels. There is wireless internet connection, satellite TV (the new TV has a larger screen than in our older photo), a DVD and a smattering of movies in case of a rainy afternoon. Smoking is not permitted indoors; pets are negotiable.

A tip for first-timers: bring layers of clothing to add or subtract. Atop mount Cadillac or out on the ocean, it can be 20 degrees cooler than downtown. And it generally cools down at night - which is why people spend the summer here! We look forward to meeting you and having you as our guests!

Testimonials

Left on 08/30/2011 for a stay in August 2011. "Beautiful, quiet location The location, just outside busy Bar Harbor is amazingly quiet and peaceful. The apartment is extremely well stocked and managed, making it easy to prepare both gourmet and "on the fly" meals. We ate in more frequently than we visited the many Bar Harbor restaurants. It was a pleasure staying at the Chalet. "

Left on 08/29/2011 for a stay in August 2011. " Romantic, private, peaceful and idyllic The Chalet of the Bears was amazing - more than we had hoped for. The setup was very welcoming; everything we could have needed was there. The location is so lovely; It was exactly what we had hoped: a chance to reconnect with each other and to have peace and privacy away from the city (we live in NYC). You have thought of everything; we found it so easy to cook, find the beach, wander the woods and enjoy Maine. Highly Recommended! "

Left on 06/22/2011 for a stay in June 2011. " Exactly the accommodations & views we wanted on our honeymoon Andy and I were so thankful to arrive at the chalet. Paul and Karen were a great help to us. The chalet was just the secluded spot we were looking for to relax and spend time together. The private stairs to the ocean are great and worth the journey. Andy and I went to the ocean at least once every day. And thanks for equipping the chalet with everything we needed to make dinner. There is a winery close by, and blackberry currant was our favorite. "

"I see that many honeymooners have preceded us. It's no wonder we, too, felt that romance. The quiet woods and cobbled beach shared only with seals and birds made the perfect setting. Your personal touches and thoughtfulness completed the week."

"It took until today for me to realize that I had entered a different world, far removed from the vulgarities and hostility of the real world. During our stay, we both experienced that 'peace that surpasses all understanding,' and we thank you both for making that possible."

"We had a great time again this week. Thank you for all the hospitality. We really love this place and can't wait to come back yet again. We won't wait another seven years for the next visit, I assure you! "

"This was the most fulfilling vacation we've had as far back as we can remember. It's the perfect getaway from the hustle and bustle of the city. We were in search of a little solitude, and we found it here at the Chalet, down at the ocean, and in the mountains of the National Park."

"Finally, after 26 years of marriage, a REAL honeymoon! We're struck by all the recommendations of places to go and things to do. Our heartfelt recommendation to those who are fortunate enough to spend some time at the Chalet of the Bears is to begin by just being still. Let all your senses absorb the wonderful sounds of silence. Don't just limit yourself to the obvious beauty perceived by the eye. FEEL the sunlight warm your being. SMELL the comforting aroma of balsam, leaves, earth and sky. TASTE the sweetness of the salty air. Contemplate how important it is to be in touch with your soul and in harmony with the one you love. Then, after you've accomplished that, somehow a good meal or an invigorating hike or bike ride will be even more enjoyable."
